What is S.H.E.D.?
The Schools to Careers seeks to join companies in the construction community with our local schools to encourage students, parents and educators to explore the various career opportunities in construction and to strengthen our workforce for the future of our industry. Wake County is teaming local general contractors and subcontractors with local schools in Wake County and surrounding counties to serve as mentors and increase awareness about and promote interest in construction related careers. This will be an ongoing partnership between contractors and high schools to continually educate students about the construction industry.
As part of the partnership with local high schools, Wake County will host an annual shed building competition. The Students’ Hands-on Experience Day (S.H.E.D.)
Drafting Students - respond to RFP -Challenge Specs – If your school has a drafting program, encourage students to participate in designing the S.H.E.D. for this year’s competition.
Carpentry Students will allow high school drafting and carpentry students to compete in a shed design and building competition.

S.P.A.R.K. is our newest addition!
This competition will be for our welding students. We understand
that the welding industry, like many others, are suffering from labor shortages. We want to make sure kids know how successful they could be in a welding/fabrication career. The SPARK Committee is still working on several of the details to pilot this program in Wake county. We have determined the students will be building fabrication tables that will be donated back to the schools. The contest will take place at SHOPSPACE a nonprofit on Capital Blvd Raleigh
Masonry Competition
And for our students interested in careers in concrete or
masonry, we have B.R.I.C.K.S. This competition gives students the opportunity to practice working with concrete, bricks, and other masonry materials. In 2023,
students built a small standard brick wall. In future
competitions, students will have the opportunity to build
concrete fire pits.
