Annual Special Events
SHED - Student Hands-On Experience Day
What is S.H.E.D.?
The Schools to Careers seeks to join companies in the construction community with our local schools to encourage students, parents, and educators to explore the various career opportunities in construction and to strengthen our workforce for the future of our industry. Wake County is teaming up local general contractors and subcontractors with local schools in Wake County and surrounding counties to serve as mentors and increase awareness about and promote interest in construction-related careers. This will be an ongoing partnership between contractors and high schools to educate students about the construction industry continually.
As part of the partnership with local high schools, Wake County will host an annual shed-building competition. The Students’ Hands-on Experience Day (S.H.E.D.)

Quick Overview - V.O.L.T. (Vocational Occupational Learning Trade)
The V.O.L.T. (Vocational Occupational Learning Trade committee seeks to join companies in the construction community with our local schools to encourage students, parents, and educators to explore the various career opportunities in construction and to strengthen our workforce for the future of our industry.
The V.O.L.T competition will consist of high school electrical students competing in electrical tasks. The students will be paired with an electrical subcontractor and supplier, and Team Partners will be responsible for mentoring their high school teams before and throughout the competition. Still, they will not assist in the actual tasks. Mentoring will include educating students about safety, quality, planning, communication, and scheduling.
A career/college fair will take place on the final competition day. This event will allow students and businesses to come together to meet and discuss the wide range of opportunities available in the construction industry.
All students who have been offered internships and/or careers will attend the sign-on day at the end of the school year.
